FBI HAILS EFCC OPERATIVES FOR ARRESTING NIGERIAN FRAUDSTER

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, has issued certificates of outstanding performance to

some operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. The beneficiaries are officers who participated actively in the arrest of Nigerian fraudsters that had been on the FBI’s wanted list.

NIGERIA VOTED AGAINST GAY RIGHTS DECLARATION AS THE UNITED NATIONS PASS LANDMARK RESOLUTION.

Nigeria has kicked against the United Nations’ resolution that endorsed the rights of gay, lesbian and

transgendered people, warning that the world body could turn into a “guinea pig” of policies that cannot

be implemented by member states. Nigeria’s vote was, however, not enough to defeat the resolution

which was passed by the Geneva-based Council with 23 votes in favor,19 against and three abstentees.

The resolution brought forward by South Africa was supported by the United States, the European

Union and Latin American countries. Nigeria, which spoke on behalf of the African group at the council,

was prominent among the nations that voted against it, including Russia, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.

New Yorkers are stepping up pressure on Gov. Cuomo to back out of an immigrant fingerprint-

sharing program-just like the Illinois governor. States who take part in Secure Communities

automatically send to Homeland Securities the fingerprints of everyone who is booked.

The Federal Government says the program is to find and deport dangerous criminals,

opponents say the program sweeps up low-level offenders and even domestic violence victims.

“The time is now for Gov. Cuomo to take a stance,” said Sunita Patel, staff attorney at the

Center for Constitutional Rights. “Individuals who have been victims of domestic violence have

been deported because of Secure Communities.”

TRAFFICKING VICTIMS’ WAIT FOR CITIZENSHIP IS REDUCED.

Victims of human trafficking and sexual exploitation no longer have to wait in limbo while their

captors are prosecuted. The Federal Government has decided that those lured here for jobs, then

forced into prostitution, can apply to live and work here legally.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services said victims can apply for a status called deferred

action while the court cases are still going on. They may also get fees waived. Trafficking victims

who help the police investigate their employers are also able to get special visas.
